Comments: A medium-sized, deciduous tree to 30' tall by 20' wide and like most elms, grows quickly once established. Foliage is simple, alternate, only slightly pubescent underneath, 21/2-5" long. Emerging leaves are distinctly purple. Flowers are inconspicuous, yellow-green, born in the leaf axils before the leaves unfold. Fruits ripen early as small winged nutlets. Plant in full sun in well-drained soil. A rare species in the trade and desirable for the collector.
