Image: Payton, Gregory - The Dawes Arboretum
.
Common name: Ivory Pillar™ Japanese tree lilac
Family: Oleaceae (olive family)
Distribution: Species native to Japan
Hardiness: USDA Zone 3
Life form: Deciduous tree
Flower Type / Color: S I - Single White
Comments: A deciduous, large shrub or small tree growing 20-25' tall and 10-15' wide. Selected for its more upright and narrow growth habit, however it still develops the typical conical outline over time. Annual growth is listed as 12-18". White flowers on large panicles occur in mid-June. The flowers are fragrant, but not with the familiar lilac fragrance. Bright green summer foliage may take on hints of yellow in the fall. An excellent choice for a late-blooming alternative to the common lilac.
