Image: Ecker, Michael E. - The Dawes Arboretum
.
Common name: compact white fir
Family: Pinaceae (pine family)
Distribution: Species native to w. United States and Mexico
Hardiness: USDA Zone 3
Life form: Evergreen tree
Comments: This irregularly rounded, slow-growing, compact selection could eventually attain about 22' tall and nearly 32' wide after many years. Its short bluish needles provide a fine and handsome texture. Considered the best type of fir for the Midwest, this species is known for retaining its lower limbs longer than many other conifers. Unlike most firs it is equally tolerant of heat and cold once established and very tolerant of urban conditions.
