An attractive medium-sized deciduous tree averaging 50-60' tall. It has dark green, attractive summer foliage and dark grayish, shaggy bark. Hop-like fruits are produced in late summer, giving this plant its name. Handsome tree for lawns, parks, golf courses, naturalized areas and even streets. Best in full sun or part shade in moist, well-drained acid soil. Tolerates dry or gravelly soil.
