Kolkwitzia amabilis - beautybush
Image: Payton, Gregory - Dawes Arboretum
.
Common name: beautybush
Family: Caprifoliaceae (honeysuckle family)
Synonym: Linnaea amabilis
Distribution: China
Hardiness: USDA Zone 4
Life form: Deciduous shrub/Subshrub
Comments: A popular, deciduous, fast-growing, large shrub that becomes upright and spreading like a fountain. Dull, dark green leaves cover slender reddish brown stems. Can grow to 10' tall and a bit less in spread. Periodic pruning out of older canes will keep plant from getting "leggy" with most of its foliage in the upper portion. Flowers are pink outside and yellow inside a flaring bell-shaped corolla. No fall color to speak of. Works well in the shrub border.
