Comments: Smooth winterberry is a 10-12 ft. tall shrub that resembles the closely related common winterberry (Ilex
verticillata). It has oval leaves that are finely toothed along the edges and shiny on their upper surface (the common winterberry has dull leaves). The leaves turn yellow before dropping in the fall. There are separate white to cream
male and female flowers; the female flowers give way to red or scarlet berries,which add color to the landscape from
September-February and provide winter food for birds. This plant needs full to part sun and moist clay, loamy or
sandy soil with a calcareous (limestone) layer. Use in shrub borders and hedges. Good choice for wet sites, such as
rain gardens and along ponds or streams.
