Taxon

Hamamelis virginiana 'Ice Queen'

.
.
Common name: Ice Queen common witch-hazel
Family: Hamamelidaceae (witch-hazel family)
Distribution: Species native to e.-c. and e. North America
Hardiness: USDA Zone 5
Life form: Deciduous shrub/Subshrub
Comments: This selection of common witch-hazel was introduced by Tim Brotzman of Ohio. It was named for the cold tolerance of its yellow flowers, which seem to rebound from freezing nights remarkably well. It is reputedly from a southern source, leading to it flowering later than average. The bloom starts in late November or December and lasts through January. Will eventually grow to 15 feet tall and wide.
