Cercis canadensis 'Alley Cat' - Alley Cat eastern redbud
Image: Payton, Gregory - The Dawes Arboretum
.
Common name: Alley Cat eastern redbud
Family: Fabaceae (pea family)
Distribution: Species native from e. United States to Mexico
Hardiness: USDA Zone 4
Life form: Deciduous tree
Comments: The fantastic, brightly colored foliage of this small tree brightens up the landscape with white variegation. Selected by Allen Bush of Jelitto Seed, this selection has a distinct variegation superior to other variegated selections because it does not burn or fade as the growing season progresses. In early spring, usually mid to late April, lavender, pea-like flowers cover the stems before the foliage. It grows to about 15-20' tall and 12' wide. Fall color is yellow but in most years not spectacular. Once established it is a tough tree doing well in urban landscapes.
