.
Common name: Berry Poppins® common winterberry
Family: Aquifoliaceae (holly family)
Distribution: Species native to e. North America
Hardiness: USDA Zone 4
Life form: Deciduous shrub/Subshrub
Plant Patent Info.: PP24, 835; 25 August, 2015
Comments: A newly introduced shrub from the Proven Winners group, it grows to only 3-4' tall by 5' wide and thus rates as one of the tightest growing cultivars of the species. Flowers open in mid to late spring, white, clustered in the axils, not showy. Fruits catch the eye in autumn when they take on a bright red color and persist into early winter, 1/4-3/8" wide. Since all hollies are dioecious, a male pollinator must be proximal to ensure fruit production.
