Zelkova serrata 'Variegata' - variegated Japanese zelkova
Image: Ecker, Michael E. - The Dawes Arboretum
.
Common name: variegated Japanese zelkova
Family: Ulmaceae (elm family)
Distribution: Species native to e. Asia
Hardiness: USDA Zone 5
Life form: Deciduous tree
Comments: This selection has small leaves with a narrow white edge to margins. It is reportedly a weak grower so will never attain the size of the species. The foliage resembles its close cousin, the elm, being alternately borne, dark green, rough to the touch, 2-5" long and coarsely toothed along the margins. This would make a wonderful bonsai or small specimen.
