Disanthus cercidifolius - redbud-hazel
.
Common name: redbud-hazel
Family: Hamamelidaceae (witch-hazel family)
Distribution: China and Japan
Hardiness: USDA Zone 6
Life form: Deciduous shrub/Subshrub
Comments: An unheralded member of the witch-hazel family, this is a medium-sized, broad-spreading deciduous shrub with slender branches. In ideal conditions may reach 10' in height, but this would not be typical for central Ohio. Beautiful fall color ranges from a soft crimson to orange. The blue-green heart-shaped leaves resemble those of redbud. Small, purple flowers open in October.
