Comments: A small deciduous tree to 35' high, often vase-shaped in appearance. Flowers are small, fuzzy stigmas that appear with leaves in early spring. Attractive patchy gray-brown bark appears reddish underneath. Does best in shady, wetland habitat and will often develop flared, flattened roots under these growing conditions. Found throughout Coastal Plain region and Mississippi Valley area.
