.
Common name: table mountain pine, prickly pine
Family: Pinaceae (pine family)
Distribution: e. United States
IUCN Red list: Least concern
Hardiness: USDA Zone 5

Comments: A small evergreen conifer tree, 18-30' tall and wide. Habit is open and irregular, often flat-topped with age. Foliage consists of twisted, deep green needles. Young stems reddish brown while older wood turns gray-brown and exfoliates. Fruit is a persistent cone, 2-4" long. Seed is winged remaining inside the cone until the presence of fire. A real oddity for the plant collector.
