Image: Ecker, Michael E. - The Dawes Arboretum
.
Common name: dragon's-eye Japanese red pine
Family: Pinaceae (pine family)
Distribution: Species native to e. Asia
Hardiness: USDA Zone 5
Life form: Evergreen tree
Comments: This bold, evergreen selection never fails to bring comments on tours of The Arboretum. Variegated bands on the needles are yellow and green. Looking down upon the needle clusters is supposed to resemble a dragon's eye. Not a slow-growing plant, it produces a wider than tall specimen, 15' tall and 25' wide with widely spaced, horizontal branches. Bark is orange-brown, flaking off to expose various color patterns. A definite specimen, site in full sun in moist, well-drained soil.
