Image: Ecker, Michael E. - The Dawes Arboretum
.
Common name: Hattie Carthan Brooklyn magnolia
Family: Magnoliaceae subfam. Magnolioideae (magnolia family)
Distribution: hybrid: selection of Magnolia acuminata × M. liliiflora
Hardiness: USDA Zone 5
Life form: Deciduous tree
Comments: A fast-growing deciduous tree probably growing about 18-20' tall and nearly as wide. It has yellowish flowers which have purple veins ascending from the base of the 4" long by 3" wide tepals. Blooming in May helps it to miss late frost damage. Perhaps an acquired taste but certainly unusual. Site in full sun to light shade in moist, well-drained soil in spring only. A wonderful specimen or small flowering shade tree.
