Taxon

Lespedeza thunbergii 'Gibralter'

.
.
Common name: Gibralter Thunberg's lespedeza
Family: Fabaceae (pea family)
Distribution: Species cultivated & naturalized in Japan & China, probable hybrid origin
Hardiness: USDA Zone 5
Life form: Deciduous shrub/Subshrub
Comments: This deciduous semi-woody plant usually suffers die-back and is treated as a perennial in our climate. Can grow 3-6' in a single season with abundant blooms that allow the branches to arch, creating a fountain-like effect. The bluish green leaves are overshadowed by the real beauty of the plant - deep rose-purple flowers in August and September. Plant in full sun to part shade in moist, well-drained soil.
