.
Common name: Korean rhododendron
Family: Ericaceae (heath family)
Synonym: Rhododendron dauricum var. mucronulatum
Distribution: n.e. Asia
Hardiness: USDA Zone 4
Life form: Evergreen shrub
Comments: Have you ever heard of a deciduous rhododendron? This one is a lepidote that loses its foliage like a deciduous azalea. It blooms very early, usually in April, and sports loads of lavender flowers on the branch tips. Fall color is reddish orange to red. First described in 1837 and introduced to the Arnold Arboretum in 1882 from Peking. An excellent plant for its early spring flowers and to use with azaleas in the garden. Plant in full sun to part shade in organic soil for best results.
