Comments: A native evergreen shrub, distinctive for its aromatic leaves and stems. it grows to around 10' tall in moist bottomlands. Foliage consists of alternate leaves, leathery in texture, elliptic to lance shaped, 3-6" long. Flowers open in spring (May) on nodding stalks, purple, 2 to 2 1/2" wide, giving way to a star-shaped cluster of fruits.
