.
Common name: Rosalind Sarver Topel holly
Family: Aquifoliaceae (holly family)
Distribution: hybrid: selection of Ilex cassine × I. opaca
Hardiness: USDA Zone 5
Life form: Evergreen tree
Comments: A small tree or large, multi-stemmed shrub to 15-20' tall. A true broadleaf evergreen, leaves on this hybrid resemble those of American holly except for being glossier, finer textured, and not as spiny. Flowers occur in mid-May as tiny, white clusters. Fruits ripen in late summer as vivid red berrylike drupes, persisting into mid-winter. Tolerant of both drought and soil alkalinity. Marginally hardy in central Ohio and branch dieback is probable in severe winters.
