Ilex decidua × I. opaca

.
.
Common name: possumhaw - American holly hybrid
Family: Aquifoliaceae (holly family)
Distribution: hybrid
Hardiness: USDA Zone 6
Life form: Deciduous shrub/Subshrub
Comments: A somewhat rare hybrid between the American holly (I. opaca) and the possumhaw (I. decidua) resulting in small evergreen trees to around 20' tall and wide. These hybrids resemble closely the characteristics of American holly but the leaf margins are adorned with far fewer sharp spines, and branches tend to be finer textured, less stiffly arranged. Fruits are pear-shaped, glossy red, berrylike drupes ripening from August through October.
