Comments:
Sarvis holly (or swamp holly) is a rare endemic, growing into a large shrub or small tree between 12-36' tall with white blooms in April and May. In North Carolina, it has been recorded in just seven counties. It is native to the coastal plains from North Carolina to Louisiana, usually found in sandy swamps, wet woods or stream banks. It has a low tolerance for calcium carbonate, preferring moist sandy to clay soils. The deciduous dull pale green leaves are ovate and inconspicuously toothed. It is easy to overlook this plant as it resembles a tupelo (Nyssa spp.) more than serviceberry(Amelanchier spp.) as the species epithet would suggest. Both a male and female plant of this holly need to be present and in bloom at the same time for berries to be produced.
