Hydrangea paniculata 'Praecox' - early panicle hydrangea
.
Common name: early panicle hydrangea
Family: Hydrangeaceae (hydrangea family)
Distribution: Species native to e. Asia
Hardiness: USDA Zone 4
Life form: Deciduous shrub/Subshrub
Comments: Give this medium-sized (6-8') deciduous shrub some room and its specimen quality will not disappoint you. A cultivar of old standing and grown in Europe for many decades. Unique for its newly emerging foliage of rich golden yellow. Leaves later become dark green, 4-6" long. Flowers are smaller than many of the newer selections, but still quite attractive in late June and July. The numerous borne, 8" flower panicles display large, white, sterile (ray) florets surrounding smaller, fertile florets. Fall color is generally a poor yellow. Outstanding as an accent plant or large hedge.
