Hydrangea arborescens - smooth hydrangea, wild hydrangea
.
Common name: smooth hydrangea, wild hydrangea
Family: Hydrangeaceae (hydrangea family)
Distribution: e. United States
Hardiness: USDA Zone 4
Life form: Deciduous shrub/Subshrub
Comments: Smooth hydrangea is a deciduous shrub that usually grows up to 5' tall and wide. It is often found growing in moist, rocky wooded slopes, ravines or along streambanks. The contrasting foliage of this species makes it stand out as the upper surface of the leaf is dark green while the underside is much paler. In fall, the leaves turn yellow. White flowers appear in clusters from May to July, giving way to seed capsules that mature in October to November. This plant is easily grown in average moisture and well-drained soils in part shade. It can adapt to a variety of soil conditions, but is intolerant of drought. It will tolerate full sun only if grown with consistent moisture; the foliage tends to decline considerably in dry conditions. Plants may die to the ground in harsh winters. Bloom occurs on new wood, so plants may be pruned back close to the ground in late winter to revitalize. Pruning stems back to the ground in late winter each year helps promote stem vigor. If not pruned back, any weakened and/or damaged stems should be removed in early spring. The genus name "Hydrangea" comes from Greek and means "water vessel" in reference to the shape of the seed capsules.
