Hamamelis × intermedia 'Birgit' - Birgit hybrid witch-hazel
.
Common name: Birgit hybrid witch-hazel
Family: Hamamelidaceae (witch-hazel family)
Distribution: hybrid: selection of Hamamelis japonica × H. mollis
Hardiness: USDA Zone 5
Life form: Deciduous shrub/Subshrub
Comments: A very early-blooming (February-March) deciduous shrub growing 12' tall and 10' wide. Its habit is upright when young, later more rounded. Plants are grafted so sprouts occurring below the graft should be removed. The crinkled flower petals are smaller than most selections but are reputedly the darkest red-purple flowering selection to date. Leaves are dark green in summer with yellow-orange fall color. Use in the shrub border.
