Hamamelis vernalis 'Sandra' - Sandra vernal witch-hazel
.
Common name: Sandra vernal witch-hazel
Family: Hamamelidaceae (witch-hazel family)
Synonym: Hamamelis 'Sandra'
Distribution: Species native to s.-c. United States, Mexico
Hardiness: USDA Zone 4
Life form: Deciduous shrub/Subshrub
Comments: An old selection but still one of the best of its type, Sandra vernal witch-hazel was selected in 1962 from a batch of seedlings for its unusually colorful young leaves. Spring foliage emerges purple, later turning to the customary green but again taking on gorgeous orange to scarlet fall color. This matures to a large shrub to 12' tall and wide. Somewhat late to flower (February/March) but effective with multitudes of yellow blooms.
