Ginkgo biloba 'Alberta' - Alberta ginkgo
.
Common name: Alberta ginkgo
Family: Ginkgoaceae (ginkgo family)
Distribution: Species native to e. China
Hardiness: USDA Zone 4
Life form: Deciduous tree
Comments: A chance seedling originating from New York state and registered and named by The State Botanical Garden of Georgia in 1996. The parent tree grew to 40' tall and wide over a 42 year span. When young, this ginkgo branches freely and densely and is more conical than the species. The fleshy (and smelly!) cones have not been reported on this cultivar to date. Deciduous foliage and branches are typical of the species, smooth and gray with right-angled buds and glossy, bright green, 2-lobed leaves. Use as a specimen or accent tree.
