Iris cristata

Common name:
crested iris
Family:
Iridaceae (iris family)
Distribution:
e. United States
Life form:
Herbaceous perennial
Comments:
Dwarf crested iris has spectacular flowers that range in color from pale blue to lilac to deep purple with gold crests on the falls (i.e., sepals). The flowers bloom in early to mid-spring. Though a small plant, growing only 3-6" tall, it makes a beautiful drift when massed together. It is usually found growing on rocky, wooded slopes or on bluffs and along streams. A number of cultivars exist that are grown as ornamentals in home landscapes, as this plant makes an excellent groundcover.
