Helwingia japonica - Japanese helwingia
.
Common name: Japanese helwingia
Family: Helwingiaceae (helwingia family)
Distribution: e. Asia
Hardiness: USDA Zone 6
Life form: Deciduous shrub/Subshrub
Comments: An extremely unusual and rarely encountered deciduous shrub with green foliage but a distinct flower. In spring, plants have the peculiar ability to develop a cluster of olive-tinged flowers at the center of each leaf. Yes, you read that correctly, the center of each leaf! In time the flowers develop into blueberry-sized black fruit that remain perched in their unusual position well into fall. Plants can be expected to reach 5-6' in height and width.
