Image: Ecker, Michael E. - The Dawes Arboretum
.
Common name: buttercup winter-hazel
Family: Hamamelidaceae (witch-hazel family)
Distribution: Japan and Taiwan
IUCN Red list: Data deficient
Hardiness: USDA Zone 5
Life form: Deciduous shrub/Subshrub
Comments: This small, deciduous shrub is a very elegant spreading form with dense branching. Fragrant, showy, yellow flowers appear in April/May before leaves emerge. Dark green leaves in summer change to yellow-green and then gold in the fall. Moderate growth rate makes it a great specimen plant in the flower border or as a patio plant.
