Image: The Dawes Arboretum
.
Common name: golden-larch
Family: Pinaceae (pine family)
Synonym: Larix amabilis, Pseudolarix kaempferi
Distribution: China
IUCN Red list: Vulnerable
Hardiness: USDA Zone 5
Life form: Deciduous tree
IUCN Red List code: VU B2ab(iii,v); 15 December 2010
Comments: A broadly conical tree with wide-spreading horizontal branches and a straight trunk. On older trees the trunk becomes gray to reddish brown with rugged furrows. Although a conifer, this plant is deciduous (it loses its needles in the fall and new ones emerge in spring). It shows no serious insect or disease problems and makes a beautiful specimen. Plant in acid soil which is moist, deep, and well-drained - avoid sites where the soil stays wet. Full sun is best but light shade is also acceptable and protection from wind is recommended. Once established, it is drought tolerant.
