.
Common name: Nikko maple
Family: Aceraceae (maple family)
Synonym: Acer nikoense
Distribution: China and Japan
IUCN Red list: Least concern
Hardiness: USDA Zone 4
Life form: Deciduous tree
Comments: A fantastic species of maple for multi-season interest. The new growth in spring is quite striking with white hairs giving it a fuzzy look. Bark becomes dark and furrowed to flakey. Leaves are made up of 3 bluish green leaflets - in the fall they turn shades of yellow, red and even pink-purple, but this varies from one tree to the next. It is slow-growing, eventually developing a round to oval shape. A great specimen tree.
