Pinus banksiana - jack pine
.
Common name: jack pine
Family: Pinaceae (pine family)
Synonym: Pinus divaricata, Pinus sylvestris var. divaricata
Distribution: n. North America
IUCN Red list: Least concern
Hardiness: USDA Zone 2
Life form: Evergreen tree
Comments: Jack pine can grow 30–72 ft. tall, though some will be shrub-sized if grown in poorer conditions. It does not usually grow perfectly straight, but often has an irregular shape. The short olive-green needles are in bundles of two. The bark is gray reddish brown and develops deep fissuring as the tree matures. This pine often forms pure stands on sandy or rocky soil. It is fire-adapted with the seed cones remaining closed for many years, until a forest fire kills the mature trees and opens the cones, reseeding the burnt ground, ridges, and lake shores.  It has very little tolerance for shade. Best growth is in areas with cool summers and cold winters. It has a high tolerance for a wide variety of soils. The specific epithet honors Joseph Banks (1743-1820), an explorer, naturalist, botanist, plant collector and first director (starting in 1772) of Kew Gardens in England.
