A deciduous suckering shrub growing in thickets near swamps and marshes in the sand-belt near the Atlantic coast and shores of Lake Erie. Its height is from 3-8', leaves shiny and resinous, dotted with glands on both sides, and fragrant when rubbed. This species is dioecious so fruits are produced on female plants only, with a male plant nearby for pollination. The small fruits, on female plants, are clustered on the branches and have a white waxy coating that was used to make traditional bayberry candles.
