Cercis canadensis - eastern redbud
.
Common name: eastern redbud
Family: Fabaceae (pea family)
Distribution: e. United States to Mexico
IUCN Red list: Least concern
Hardiness: USDA Zone 4
Life form: Deciduous tree
Comments: A native deciduous tree whose flowers in early spring, usually mid to late April, light up Ohio wood edges and fields. Bright magenta pea-like flowers emerge from stems, sometimes even fairly large branches. About when flowers begin to fade, heart-shaped leaves emerge giving this plant a distinctive look in the garden. Often has multiple trunks and nice used as a specimen, accent or just a bright splash of color in the garden. Fall color is yellow but in most years not spectacular. Once established it is a tough tree doing well in urban landscapes.
