Stewartia pseudocamellia - Japanese stewartia
.
Common name: Japanese stewartia
Family: Theaceae (tea family)
Distribution: Japan and Korea
IUCN Red list: Least concern
Hardiness: USDA Zone 5
Life form: Deciduous tree
Comments: A much sought after, small deciduous flowering tree with attractive bark having truly four-season appeal! In June the 2-3" wide white flowers with clustered orange stamens reminds one of camellia, thus the name. Summer foliage is a pleasant medium green but fall brings on red and orange highlights. After the flowers and fall color, enjoy a tree with one of the finest ornamental bark shows around. Tan, green, brown on smooth and glossy exfoliating bark never seems to look the same. Grows in an upright to vase-shaped habit, to 15-20' tall.
