Comments: This is a variety of bigtooth maple that is commonly called canyon maple. It occurs within the native range of bigtooth maple, but specifically in Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. It grows either as a small tree up to 50 ft. tall or as a shrub up to 25 ft.tall. It is often found in canyon bottoms, along streams, or on dry canyon slopes. The leaves are lobed and hairy beneath. The flowers have no petals and bloom every 2-3 years.
