.
Common name: green-flowered milkweed, short green milkweed
Family: Asclepiadaceae (asclepias family)
Distribution: c. and e. United States
Hardiness: USDA Zone 5
Life form: Herbaceous perennial
Comments: This perennial plant is 1½–2' tall and unbranched. The central stem is light green to light purplish green. The upper leaf surface is medium green, while the lower leaf surface is light green. From the axils of middle to upper leaves, there are nodding clusters of yellowish green flowers that bloom during early summer. Flowers give way to smooth, narrow seed pods which split open when ripe releasing silky-tailed seeds. This plant is native to prairies, dry slopes, dry open woods, fields and roadsides in central and eastern North America. Monarch butterflies need milkweed plants in order to survive.
