Taxon

Corylus (Gellatly #11)

.
.
Common name: hazel (Gellatly #11), filbert (Gellatly #11)
Family: Betulaceae (birch family)
Distribution: hybrid: selection of Corylus colurna × C. avellana
Hardiness: USDA Zone 5
Life form: Deciduous tree
Comments: This selection of deciduous shrub is a hybrid, sometimes referred to (incorrectly) as a Chinese trazel. It has been shown to be completely resistant to infection by Eastern Filbert Blight, a destructive pathogen detrimental to commercial and ornamental Corylus species. It is being used in breeding programs to develop new commercial varieties. This selection will still produce edible nuts and makes a great large shrub for a backdrop or screen.
