Taxon

Corylus avellana 'Santiam'

.
.
Common name: Santiam European filbert, Santiam European hazel
Family: Betulaceae (birch family)
Distribution: Species native to Europe, n. Africa and w. Asia
Hardiness: USDA Zone 5
Life form: Deciduous tree
Comments: This is a selection of hazel bred for nut production and resistance to Eastern Filbert Blight, a fungal pathogen detrimental to this species. While the species can grow to 20' tall, this selection is almost half that size (8-12'). This shrub is otherwise typical of the species. Male flowers (catkins) are showy in early spring as they elongate up to 4". It develops into an effective hedge or tall screen and is good for human and wildlife edibility.
