Corylus 'Carmela'

.
.
Common name: Grimo 208P hazel, Grimo 208P filbert
Family: Betulaceae (birch family)
Synonym: Corylus 'Grimo 208P'
Distribution: hybrid
Hardiness: USDA Zone 5
Life form: Deciduous shrub/Subshrub
Comments: A shrub to 8' originating from breeding work crossing several species of filbery- including European and American filbert. Selected by Grimo Nut Nursery in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. In addition to their edible fruit (nuts), the primary value of these hybrids is their resistance to the devastating effects of Eastern Filbert Blight which can kill the European filbert in 2-3 years. Another ornamental asset is their expanding male flowers (catkins), yellow-green, 5-6" long, in late March/April.
