Silphium trifoliatum

.
.
Common name: whorled rosinweed
Family: Asteraceae (aster, daisy, sunflower family)
Synonym: Silphium asteriscus var. trifoliatum
Distribution: e. United States
Habitat: Prairies, meadows, roadsides, along railways; 100–900 m
Life form: Herbaceous perennial
Comments: This perennial plant is an excellent choice for full to partial shade. Its leaves attach to the stem in a 'whorled' formation. It features large yellow daisy flowers blooming late summer, similar to a sunflower. Its natural habitat is open, grassy areas such as prairies, river cobble bars, and roadsides. Narrow leaves in groups of 2 and 3 are arranged along the stem giving the plant a coarse-lacy effect. Goldfinches love the seeds.
