Sciadopitys verticillata 'Foxtail' - Foxtail Japanese umbrella-pine
.
Common name: Foxtail Japanese umbrella-pine
Family: Sciadopityaceae
Distribution: Species native to Japan
Hardiness: USDA Zone 5
Life form: Evergreen tree
Comments: This unusual evergreen tree could potentially reach 20' in central Ohio, but after many years. The flat, rubbery textured needles are lustrous dark green in summer, often taking on a bronze yellow-green in winter. This selection was registered in 1993 by Dr. Sydney Waxman of The University of Connecticut. It is noted for having widely spaced branches, with its lateral shoots having a tufted appearance. 'Foxtail' is a fabulous and unusual specimen retaining good foliar interest year-round. Plant in full sun in moist, well-drained soil.
