A somewhat compact, rounded species growing 3-6' high and wide. Flowers in mid-May, variable in color depending on the seed source, from pink, rose, reddish or rarely white. Attractive foliage has undersides with a felt-like covering called indumentum. Plant in well-drained soil, rich in organic matter. Protect from strong winter winds and winter sun.
