This shrub grows 5' high by 3' wide with a loose, upright form. It is a lepidote (scaly leaved) rhododendron. Foliage is puberulous (covered with minute hairs), some of which overwinter making it partly evergreen. Leaves are shiny and dark green on the top, paler beneath and leathery. It blooms very early and consistently; its flowers resist spring frosts better than some other forms.
