.
.
Common name: Carolina rhododendron, piedmont rhododendron
Family: Ericaceae (heath family)
Synonym: Rhododendron minus var. minus
Distribution: s.e. United States
Habitat: Woods and mountain balds, moist slopes, streamsides, rocky cliffs and ridges; 50-1700 m
Hardiness: USDA Zone 5
Life form: Evergreen shrub
Comments: This species grows throughout much of the Blue Ridge Mountains in woods and on slopes. The habit is compact with an eventual height of 3-4' with a greater spread. Flowers are pink to pale rose-purple and are not produced until June. Small-leaf (lepidote) rhododendrons need less protection than their large-leaf cousins do. Plant in full to part sun in soil that is well-drained and acid with some protection from strong wind. Plant high if drainage is questionable.
