Comments:
This is a rare, endangered species that is only known to grow on four mountain tops in the Ouachita mountain range of west central Arkansas. It is a medium-sized deciduous tree of the red oak group, growing 40-50' tall and 20-30' wide. Insignificant yellowish-green flowers in separate male and female catkins appear in early spring as the leaves emerge. Fruits are oval acorns. The foliage is broad and dark green, deeply cut into 5-7 spiny-tipped lobes and resembling sugar maple leaves. Leaves generally produce good red fall color. The grayish bark is smooth on young trees, but acquires dark ridging on the trunk with age. This oak is generally considered to be durable and long-lived with no significant problems. It is easily grown in average, dry to medium, well-drained soils in full sun. Good drought tolerance. Use as a shade tree or lawn tree. This rare species deserves a prominent location in the landscape, though it may be difficult to find in the nursery trade.
