Taxon

Nyssa biflora

.
.
Common name: swamp tupelo, swamp blackgum
Family: Nyssaceae (tupelo family)
Synonym: Nyssa sylvatica var. biflora
Distribution: s.e. United States
Habitat: Swamps, flatwood depressions and ponds, bogs, wet streamheads, seepage slopes, often in sites with standing water during part of the year or with organic soils saturated year-round, less often in mesic forests; 0–100(–200) m
IUCN Red list: Least concern
Hardiness: USDA Zone 6
Life form: Deciduous tree
Comments: This less common species of black gum or tupelo is native to the more swampy forests of the southeast United States. This makes it much more tolerant to standing water and heavy soils than even its normally tolerant cousin, Nyssa sylvatica. The tree is deciduous, growing to 40-60' tall with black fruits normally in clusters of 2. Trunks become swollen and buttressed with age. Fall color is a striking red.
