Richweed is a summer-bloomer, often when little else is blooming in the woodland or forest. The yellow flowers have a white fringe on the lower lip and a characteristic lemon scent. Plants can grow up to five feet tall. Native Americans used parts of the plant to treat various ailments. The leaves can be used in teas; the underground roots were often used for urinary or kidney problems, and as astringents.
