Comments: Becomes a large deciduous tree, 80' in its native Japan but remains about half this size in cultivation. Usually this species is quite upright and oval in shape. Leaves are palmately compound, 5-7 leaflets, dark green taking on no appreciable fall color but showing good resistance to leaf scorch. Flowers arrive in mid-May tucked under the foliage as upright creamy white clusters, 4-8" long. Fruit is a large nut, 2" across.
