Comments: A large, deciduous shade tree, conical in habit while young; when mature more upright oval. Grows 70' tall and often as wide. Leaves consist of 5-7 leaflets attached to stout, gray stems. Older bark is fissured into plate-like scales. White flowers occur in May; each flower has a blotch that begins yellow then turns red. Light brown spiny capsules contain up to 2 seeds.
